GT Class Best Ever?

The GT category will again be one of the most competitive entries here at Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda.  Some race veterans are saying the GT class is the best ever.

Heading the list is the Corvette team. Drivers Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner clinched the GT at Virginia International Raceway and also sewed up the team championship for Corvette Racing and manufacturer title for Chevrolet.

"Winning the Drivers Championship in a category as fiercely competitive as the ALMS GT class requires speed, stamina, strategy, and teamwork," said Mark Kent, director of Chevy Racing. "Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner have those qualities, and now they have the 2012 GT Drivers Championship. Both are excellent racers and outstanding representatives for Corvette and Chevrolet. We congratulate Oliver and Tommy on their well-deserved championship, and we are confident that there are many more titles in their future."

But Corvette has its work cut out for them at Petit Le Mans. Porsche, BMW and Ferrari are all expected to be contenders, while Lotus and Viper continue to develop news cars that should be in the thick of the battle in 2013. And there’s rumors Acura and McLaren will be joining the GT class soon!  Are you listening Ford?

BMW won the season opener at Sebring. The defending GT champions have always been strong at Road Atlanta and will likely be Corvette’s toughest challenge.  Meanwhile, the Flying Lizard Porsches will be a top contender with veterans Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmesiter at the wheel. The Team Falken Porsche will be another tough challenger (especially if its raining!). The ESM Ferrari team has shown tremendous improvement this year, and remember there will also be GT cars from the ELMS in the race!
